Chapter 27

Vortex

The force of the impact was like nothing he had ever felt before. The wave crashed with such overwhelming power that the fire construct warped, no longer the pristine sphere of fire that Parth had shaped. The deformation continued as the wave kept pressing on it.

Moira’s spinning vectors worked as a secondary shell, but even they were bent out of shape, and one side of the sphere was just flattened. Parth groaned as he closed his eyes and did his best to maintain the integrity of the flaming structure.

Within seconds, he restored it to its spherical shape. But he could already feel a headache building.

The main problem was that this was not just some water he could easily stop. As Stefan had said, the dungeon had enforced this entire trap with mana. He had hoped that the heat of his flames would be enough to punch through the wave, but it wasn’t working. The liquid was harder to evaporate due to all that mana infused into it.

Parth didn’t want to waste all his mana on a long shot, so, he braced himself and held onto the construct. He previously thought that his mana reserves would offset his elemental weakness to water. Sadly, the volume of water was too vast to overpower.

Right as he took a breath, there was another impact. This time from the opposite end. Once again, the deformation started, only to be immediately countered. But each hit was problematic. He was spending large amounts of his mana and concentration to tank these hits. These were not some measly blows from a monster. They were caused by a gigantic wave of water moving at incredible speeds. The scale was totally different. Just two hits had rocked him already. If he hadn’t had his massive reserves, he would have died and taken his teammates along just because of the opening salvo.

The water constantly ate at his sphere, reducing its temperature and trying to snuff it out. Not to mention the sheer force of the wave itself. Parth constantly felt the water pressing in on them from all directions. Fighting against the weight of it all was tiring. Right then and there, Parth understood how Atlas might have felt as he held up the heavens. He didn’t know how long he could keep going like this.

Not only did he have to maintain a high temperature on the outside, but he had to also ensure that his flames did not burn his teammates. The overall temperature inside the shell was high as well, so he frequently had to make sure that it did not exceed a certain limit. He was focusing on too many things and had to ensure that he did not fail in any of them. All in all, his mind was under siege.

Moira and Kwame said something, but he couldn’t hear them. He expended every drop of his mental faculties on the task of surviving the onslaught of the tsunami.

Apart from all this, there was also the issue of tumbling.
